It should be earning you money and working hard 24/7 for you.
So you have a website with great content but it does not seem to be getting much local traffic to it. Why you ask?
From my experience many people in the Port Stephens region still rely on word of mouth to do business and make purchases. They tend to only go looking for a website when they want to check you out or because someone has referred you.
Visitors to the region will generally use the internet to find our local businesses. This means if you are online and can be found with the right keywords then happy days. But what about the local trade?
Well Facebook and email marketing are 2 of the most powerful tools that Port Stephens businesses can use to promote their business to locals. Other social media platforms are used by locals but it does not appear that they use them to search for businesses close to them or get recommendations.
Below I outline some simple steps to market your website to get more local business using Facebook.
Golden rule – all roads should lead to your website
This means that what ever marketing tools you use either online or offline they should all be taking people to your awesome website.
Because the objective of a website should be to get business. This means that people want to contact you or buy from you.
Why Facebook for local trade?
Many of us have a Facebook Page which we hope grows and promotes our business.
Facebook is a social media online marketing tool. The operative word here is ‘social’. This means that it really should be the place that you use to have a quick social chat with your clients. Call it the coffee room or supermarket chat if you like.
Content posted on Facebook should be high quality and be presented in a conversational way. Be chatty and personable. Think about how you talk about your business when you meet people. Let your passion for what you do shine through. The more people realise you love what you do and truly care about your customer service the more people will want to do business with you.
Use your network. Facebook in our region is how many people organise their social life and ask for recommendations on businesses. Ensure that you proactively engage your champions in your network so they promote you on Facebook. When you do a post on your Page remember to share that post on your own timeline and in any local groups that are appropriate.

What to post?
At least 50% of your Facebook posts should be promoting content on your website. The other 50% can be providing content that value adds to your website content or provides insightful, useful and entertaining posts.
If you have a blog or news section on your website then this content should be going on your Facebook page. If you do not have one then I recommend considering adding this option to your website. This means that every time you have news to share about your business or you want to provide content that value adds you can. Value add content is when you write a post like I am now to help people in various ways. Then you post this great content on Facebook.
All your Facebook posts should have a great image. I recommend always doing a photo post and then adding your words and then a link to your website. That way you control the content. When you do a normal Facebook status update and add text with a link it is a random thing as to what Facebook will show for that website link.
Facebook is about being social and providing content that encourages people to interact with you. Ask questions. Provide content that is topical and relevant to your business.
Write content so it is all about them. This means you need to think like a customer. What would you want to know? How do you want to be treated? What would make you purchase from a local business?
About 2 to 3 posts a week on Facebook is great.
Use Facebook Advertising
This type of advertising if done with great content and targeting our local region is very cost effective. All the businesses I know that use it locally get a higher level of engagement on their content and improved brand awareness.
